Paris 2024 Olympics: Record LGBTQ Participation

A record 193 out LGBTQ athletes are competing in the Paris 2024 Summer Games, surpassing the 186 in Tokyo 2021. For the first time, there are 20 out male Olympians participating. Equestrian leads with eight out LGBTQ male athletes. Approximately 170 of the LGBTQ athletes are women. The U.S. women’s basketball team features seven out of 12 players who are LGBTQ. The Australian women’s soccer team has at least 12 out of 18 players who are LGBTQ. Women’s elite sports have been more welcoming to LGBTQ athletes due to higher representation. More male athletes are coming out, finding their teammates more accepting than expected. High-profile queer athletes include British diver Tom Daley, track star Sha’Carri Richardson, and trans nonbinary runner Nikki Hiltz. Nikki Hiltz will compete in the 1,500-meter race for Team USA. Hiltz, rugby player Kris Thomas, and soccer star Quinn are among at least three nonbinary athletes competing. The ban on trans women in certain sports hasn’t affected the overall LGBTQ numbers, says Cyd Zeigler of OutSports. The elimination of softball from the Olympics reduced the number of LGBTQ athletes, as it had eight in Tokyo. The Swedish women’s soccer team, which didn’t qualify for Paris, had four LGBTQ players in Tokyo. Women’s soccer is the queerest sport at the Olympics this year, with 46 out players across all teams.
